Bucharest: The Midland Youth Hostel

Romania is an amazing country. In the capital Bucharest (the Romanians call the city București) traveler find some very interesting places to feel the history of this European country.

Following I write about my experiences staying at “The Midland Youth Hostel” in  Bucharest. The Midland Youth Hostel is located in the city-center of București, only a few minutes walk from Piața Romana. I stayed there as backpacker with a friend from 18th to 19th of July 2009 in a double room. Here is my review:

Hostel facilities:

  • There is an internet-connection and a public computer available, but I didn’t use them. So I cannot tell you anything about the internet-speed in the hostel.
  • There is a big lounge with cosy couches. The hostel is located in an old house with high rooms – I like this style!
  • Breakfast is included. I didn’t try it, because we had to go to the train station early in the morning.
  • There is a washing-machine, where you can do your laundry. I didn’t try it.
  • The people at the reception are very friendly and helpful.

Room-facilities:

In my double-room with one big double-bed directly under the roof I found the following facilities:

  • In the room is a cupboard.
  • There are two windows (great view!!) in the room and they can be opened.
  • There is no net against mosquitos in front of the window – but this is no problem.
  • Room has no balcony.
  • There is no air condition but a fan available.
  • There is a TV-set in the room.
  • The room is very quiet, you can leave the window open in the night.
  • The room was clean but a little bit obsolete.

Bathroom:

  • The bathroom is situated down the stairs, you share it with other guests.
  • There are showers.
  • The hot water worked well.
  • Toilet paper was available.
  • Warning: Be careful in the night – the switch for the light is far away. Perhaps you should use a torch.
  • The bathroom was a little bit dirty.

Location of the Midland Youth Hostel:

  • The Metro station at Piața Romana is not far away (3-5 minutes walk).
  • Directions and maps shown on Hostelbookers are right. It’s easy to find. From the main train station (București Nord) take the subway to Piața Romana.
  • There are some restaurants and shops around the hostel.

Summary

I enjoyed the stay in Bucharest. The Midland Youth Hostel was a good place to start our sightseeing tour in the ancient city. I’ve stayed there only one night – so I didn’t use many facilities in the hostel and also didn’t stay in the lounge for a long time.

But I think, it’s a good place to get in touch with other travelers and to make new friends. It’s a cheap and safe place to stay in Bucharest. I felt welcome there.

You can book The Midland Youth Hostel here or, if you don’t like it, choose another hostel.
